International Women’s Day Celebration, March 8, 2013

IWD13 FlyerRaha Iranian Feminist Collective invites you to celebrate International Women’s Day with us!

We mark this date in order to reflect on the struggles of the past year, to celebrate our successes, and to discuss our collective hopes and future. The theme this year is Sanctioning Iran: a Feminist Response. As ever more punishing rounds of sanctions are imposed on Iran, we ask how patriarchy and foreign intervention intersect and impact the lives of Iranian women. Come find out why feminist politics are crucial for understanding and opposing these sanctions and what can we do here.

Sanctioning Iran: a Feminist Response will present first hand accounts of life under U.S.-imposed sanctions in Iran and Iraq, and offer a historical look at feminist struggles against U.S. militarism that took place in the 1980s.

Plus solidarity greetings from organizations and activists whose amazing work towards gender and sexuality justice we are proud to honor!

Stick around afterwards to celebrate more than a century of the fight for women’s liberation with a DJ-ed dance party!

Speakers include:

Silvia Federici is a feminist activist, teacher, and author, most recently of Revolution at Point Zero: Housework, Reproduction, and Feminist Struggle. In 1972, she was a co-founder of the International Feminist Collective, the organization that launched the Wages For Housework campaign.

Zeinab Saleh is an anthropologist, teacher and political essayist whose work appears in venues such as jadaliyya.com. Her research focuses on community formations among the Iraqi diaspora in the UK in the aftermath of the 2003 Iraq invasion. Zeinab lived in Iraq under the US-UN sanctions regime.

Asoo is a member of Havaar: Iranian Initiative Against War, Sanctions and State Repression and a leading organizer of a new anti-sanctions campaign.

Catherine Sameh is a member of Raha Iranian Feminist Collective and the Associate Director of the Barnard Center for Research on Women.

Following the program we will continue the celebration Raha-style, with food, drink, dancing, and of course, cake! We look forward to seeing you there!
